Lenovo to hire 12,000 R&D professionals to double investment: CEO

In a bid to double its investment in Research and Development, Lenovo has affirmed that it will be hiring 12,000 R&D Professionals around the world, in the next three years.

The Chairman and CEO, Yuanqing Yang, stated this during Lenovo’s annual company kick-off to mark the start of Lenovo’s financial year, and also outlined a vision to achieve Net-zero by 2050.

Lenovo has continued to transform from a product company to a worldwide technology powerhouse that also includes services and solutions, it has increased its commitment to innovation, which is underpinned by ESG commitments.

Lenovo’s CEO stated the company’s goals for the coming year, which include developing new growth engines, investing in new and emerging technologies, and maintaining long-term profitability gains.

The new and evolving IT architecture will be the focus of R&D efforts. Teams will work on new product and business model development, as well as incubating technologies ranging from edge computing to technology that will help businesses capitalize on the metaverse, as well as emerging and disruptive innovations such as next-generation AI and heterogeneous computing. This will help them prepare for the future. All with the goal of assisting organizations of all sizes in leveraging new and upcoming technologies such as the metaverse.

Lenovo highlighted its objective to reach net-zero by 2050 alongside its R&D commitments, and Lenovo is working with the Science-Based Target Initiative to set goals that support this vision.

For the past 14 years, the company has reported on its ESG commitments, including its activities and ambitions in climate change mitigation, the circular economy, and sustainable materials.

Lenovo surpassed its 2020 carbon reduction targets a year ahead of schedule in 2020, and it has already set science-based targets for 2030.

Yuanqing Yang has pledged to positively influence 15 million lives through philanthropic activities and collaborations by 2025, in addition to the net-zero ambition. The company’s philanthropic aim is to empower disadvantaged populations with access to technology and STEM education, resulting in smarter technology for all.

He further stated that: “Our investment plan will center around the “Client-Edge-Cloud-Network-Intelligence” architecture, with a three-track approach to focus on short-, medium- and long-term payback.  Our intention is to optimize between technology with quick market returns and foundational research, and between continuous improvement and breakthrough innovation.”
