Today, the South Korean electronic giant, LG has officially announced that the global eminent roboticist, Dr. Dennis Hong has joined LG Advanced Robotics Lab to help advance the group-wide future growth drive in the high-tech industry.
According to the company, Dr. Hong will play a key role in LG’s long-term aim to build integrated robot logistics solutions that include storage and home delivery for retail customers.
Dr. Hong is the founder and head of the University of California, Los Angeles’ Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory (RoMeLa), which is part of the Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Department (UCLA).
His work on robot locomotion and manipulation, autonomous vehicles, and humanoid robots has earned him international acclaim and prestigious awards, including the National Science Foundation’s CAREER Award, SAE International’s Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Freudenstein/General Motors Young Investigator Award (ASME).
LG and Dr. Hong have been collaborating closely to build a more advanced and integrated robotic system for the logistics industry that can handle every stage of the order delivery process, from the warehouse to the customer’s front door.
According to LG expects, the partnership with Dr. Hong will serve to promote breakthroughs in robotics technology to a wider audience, in addition to generating an efficient, high-tech system that will provide enormous value to the logistics industry locally and globally.
Furthermore, Dr. Hong’s advice and guidance to the Advanced Robotics Lab is likely to have a long-term positive impact on LG’s robot business.
LG has actively engaged in various educational initiatives geared to expand the knowledge and expertise of its committed team of researchers in recent years to grow its competitiveness in the fast-moving field of robotics.
In 2021, the corporation even assisted in the creation of a program at RoMeLa that is already assisting in the development of the future generation of robotics researchers.
LG’s collaboration with Dr. Hong isn’t the first time it’s teamed up with a prominent robotics specialist. Kim Sang-bae, a prominent robot scientist and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, joined the business in 2020. (MIT).
LG and Dr. Kim collaborated on research on ways to improve robot manipulation abilities, such as picking up and placing objects.
LG has also been collaborating with its sister companies to help speed up the development of robot solutions by exchanging know-how and technology. LG Electronics teamed up with LG Uplus, a South Korean mobile carrier, last year to demonstrate autonomous driving with a robot using mobile edge computing (MEC) and a 5G core network based on Amazon Web Services’ cloud infrastructure.
The demonstration was part of the two businesses’ efforts to commercialize 5G cloud robots, which are supposed to perform a wide range of functions, such as distribution and guidance while reducing associated costs and energy consumption.
LG introduced a four-wheeled delivery robot a year ago that could alter the distance between its wheels depending on the terrain it was traveling. LG’s delivery robot also has a 5G SA industrial terminal, which enables the real-time transfer of high-resolution photos to the MEC platform.
Speaking on the collaboration, the tech giant said: “Through collaboration and the tireless pursuit of customer-driven innovation, LG will continue to develop diverse robots for industry and consumers that help make life easier.”
